Two new Vocabulary words of the day!!

1/14/22

Signify (ies) ~ Stereotypical

1. Signifies ~ v. To signify means to "mean." Be a sign or symbol of something; mean something; do something to communicate a message or meaning; have influence on or an important effect on something. When Paul Revere looked for the lanterns in the church tower, he knew that one would signify that the British were coming by land and two would indicate that they were coming by sea. When objects are endowed with symbolic meaning, they are said to signify things. A dove signifies peace, a six-pointed star signifies Judaism, a frog signifies fertility.

2. Stereotypical ~ adj. Relating to a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Stereotypical describes an action or a characterization that is oversimplified, widely imitated, or handed down by tradition. As in Aesop’s Fables, stereotypical characters behave predictably, or according to type, which, in Greek, literally means to strike in a mold or an impression. But most interesting people and stories do not easily fit into molds, and typecasts can be socially offensive. It might be stereotypical in a comedy skit to see police officers eating donuts, but when you get pulled over for missing a stop sign it’s best to keep that idea to yourself!

1... (a) He nodded to signify that he approved. (b) He gave her a diamond ring to signify his love. (c) A mark by your student number will signify you’ve completed all of your assignments. (d) Does the high rate of unemployment signify the beginning of even more recession?

China does only 2 things: Controls society and hurts the U.S., in the eyes of FT reporters.

China has a digital renminbi. Its objectives: Cuts the U.S. supremacy and controls the society and the economy at home. Or so FT claims. I wonder if China has ever done anything else? I quote:

“China’s digital plan dovetails with broader ambitions for its currency as Beijing hopes the technology will help promote the renminbi internationally and weaken the US dollar’s supremacy. “

“While in the US cryptocurrencies are steeped in the language of libertarianism, in China the digital currency project is tied up in the Communist party’s drive to maintain control over society and the economy. The technology is partly designed to reinforce its surveillan.....”

Why does China have digital RMB? My two-penny worth.

1. Digital RMB has nothing to do with internationalisation of the RMB, and nothing to do with the US dollar supremacy.

2. Compete with Alipay or Ten-pay? You must be joking. Govt has a million other ways to deal with them.

3. Controls society or the economy? Why the round-about way? Doesn’t it already have full control?

I think the central bank is doing this without a strong agenda for anything. It is just experimenting things. Maybe to enhance its technological capability. Maybe to cut paper notes in circulation.

It was a hot, humid day, and my brother Walt and I had decided that the only way to survive it would be to go swimming in a deep swimming hole across Mr.Blickez’s pasture(牧场) and through some woods.

The only problem with our plan was that this pasture was guarded by a huge, mean Hereford bull. Mr.Blickez had told us that Elsie was the meanest bull in the township, maybe even the county, and we believed him. But the hotter it got, the more we thought there was something fishy about his claim. For one thing, we remembered Mr.Blickez liked telling tall tales; for another, Elsie seemed like an odd name for a bull.

Finally, I talked Mom into asking permission for us to walk through the pasture, but then another problem surfaced. Mom said she would talk to Mr.Blickez if we would take our cousin Joanie along with us. Joanie was almost two years older than me and a head taller. If her teasing ever got around my grade school, it would be all over for me. In fact, I still had a headache from a quarrel with her that morning. “I’m not going swimming with that dumb girl cousin.” I told my mom.

“Either Joanie goes with, or you stay home alone,” Mom said in her serious tone. I gave in and we set out. On our way across the pasture, Walt yelled suddenly. Elsie had approached him quietly and was licking his back. Joanie and I dove under the wire fence, but while I was on the ground I looked up and saw that Elsie wasn’t a big mean bull after all. She was going to keep licking my brother’s back as long as he stood still.

We had many good days growing up and visiting our secret swimming hole guarded by the so-called “big mean bull”. And as it turned out, for a girl cousin, Joanie hasn’t been too bad. She’s been one of my best friends over the years.

Master Quque asked Master Changwu: “I have heard from Confucius: the sage is not utilitarian. He neither takes his advantage nor sidesteps his disadvantage, neither lusts for fame and benefit nor clings to the Way ponderously, says nothing about what he says, says something indeed when he has nothing to say, but break away from the worldly affairs. Confucius claims his such words are heedless, but I think they are going well along the Way. What is your opinion, my master?”

Master Changwu said: “These words are abstract enough to perplex Yellow Emperor, how can Confucius understand. Moreover, you made a haste judge as you are eager to listen to a cock while seeing an egg or you are avid to roast a dove while finding a crossbow bullet. As heedlessly I converse with you, you can heedlessly listen to me. Why would the sage stand by the sun and the moon and tuck the whole universe under his arms? Why would the sage agree with everything he meets and just let it be? Put aside the confusion and chaos, then you can revere the unity as its inferior part. The mass hustle and toil, while the sage looks stupid and simple, merges ten thousand years into one purity, and cherishes everything in the same way.

How do I know the love of life is not a delusion? How do I know the hate of death is not like a young who lose his way and does not know he should go home?
