If you want to become a better reader, what should you know about the speed of reading?

Some people read very quickly, while others read slowly. But which one is better?

The quick reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down to read instructions carefully.

He may read so quickly that he does not take time to fully understand the ideas and information which are important to remember.

The slow reader may be a good reader when he may spend altogether too much time in reading a simple story which is meant to be enjoyed but is not important enough to be remembered.

So you see, neither the reader who reads everything quickly nor the one who reads everything slowly is really a good reader.

Learn how to read. The secret of good reading is to be an active reader-one who continually asks questions that lead to a full understanding of the writer's message.

     Use your time best. Even the best students put off their work sometimes. But when that happens, they face it. "If you want to be at the top, make sure to finish the work on time." says Christi Anderson, a top student at Lyman High School.

     Take good notes and use them. Reading the text is important, but the teacher is going to test you on what he or she emphasized. That's what you find in your notes.

     Another kind of important "secret" of the top students is not so secret at all. For almost all of them, their parents' help is important.

A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn’t around．Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes．It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class．You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime．You want to have new friends．but how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends．But remember, there’s always room for more friends．  

Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break．Look for chances to say hi to them，smile，and be friendly．Offer to share something or express your appreciation to them．Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom．When you’re at break，walk over to kids you want to play with．act friendly，and say “Hi，can l play, too?” or just join in．

If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends．Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends．The best way to make friends is to be a friend．Be kind，be friendly，share，say nice things，offer to help—and pretty soon，you’ll have one，or two，or even more new friends.

You might still miss that special best friend．But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before she left：You can introduce her to your new friends!

You have probably heard it before, most likely from your English teacher. If you want to become a good writer, read good writing. Unluckily, you may not have understood what did good to you and even what you were supposed to get from that experience.

As you progress through the work, think about whether it is “easy” reading or not. Do you become so interested in the subject and flow of the writing that you completely forget the person who wrote it, or does the composition sometimes call too much attention to itself through words and phrases that seem out of place or unexpected? Every time a word strikes you as poorly chosen, stop to consider why it has this effect. Also, do not spend a lot of time analyzing the passage but put more efforts in enjoying it from the whole.

Another thing I do, particularly with nonfiction books, is to select a part to read as if it is a completely separate work. Once again, read as a common reader rather than a critic . For learning how words and phrases work together on the most basic level, however, nothing is more suitable than devoting yourself to reading poems. A poet is often trying to put a book’s worth of meaning and feelings into lines, and every side of the work shows a very close attention to craft (工艺).

As you can see, there is no simple way of reading to improve your writing. The key is not to make it boring. Select writers you admire or like most, and enjoy their works as anyone else would. As long as you are reading, you are improving yourself as a writer.
