Progressives trounced conservatives in the primaries, repudiating the ef- forts by Taft to purge the party of troublemakers. In the general elections, however, the newly revived Democratic party captured most of the head- lines. Democrats won control of the House for the first time in sixteen years and elected twenty-six governors, including Woodrow Wilson of New Jer- sey. Republicans continued to hold a majority in the Senate, but the balance of power was precarious due to the presence of several progressives who might vote with Democrats on any given issue. Reform was at fever pitch in America in 1910, and Democrats and progressives were clearly in step with public opinion. Taft, with two more years to serve, had been severely dam- aged politically.

74. Ursula Burns: From Poverty to the Fortune 500

Ursula Burns was raised by her single mother in the notorious Baruch housing projects on the lower east side of New York City. Her parents were of Panamanian descent who moved to the United States in search of a better life. What they found was drugs, gang violence, and impoverished living conditions. She once told the New York Times that she lived in Baruch, "when it was really bad, when the gangs were there, when the drug addicts were there." From these humble beginnings, Burns has risen to become the first African-American woman to head a Fortune 500 company.

Despite not having much money, Burns' mother insisted she get a good education and somehow managed to send her to a private Catholic School. She attended Cathedral High School, and hoped to study mechanical engineering. However, when she went to college, she felt out of place, and intimidated. Her mother told her that she could not let where she came from define who she is, and Burns followed that advice her entire life. She said people told her from early on in life that she had three strikes against her. She was Black, poor, and female, but that didn't deter her. She credits her mother for being the driving force behind her success.

Burns first worked at Xerox Corporation as a summer intern in 1980. Through the years, she has worked her way up the corporate ladder to become the company's Chair, and Chief Executive Officer. She became CEO in 2009, and during her tenure she transformed the company from a primarily copy paper, and copy machine company, to a well-rounded, full-service company. It has, not only survived, but thrived in a world that is quickly becoming paperless. She has been listed by Forbes several times as one of the most powerful women in the world, ranking No. 22 in 2014.

I was headed in for a job interview several years back. As I'm walking in, two other men are approaching the door from different angles. One of them speeds up to cut off the other and get in the door first, and the other walks in, shaking his head in disbelief. As I walk in behind them, the first guy runs to the elevator and presses the button, not holding the elevator for the other guy and me. Again, the second guy just shakes his head and we wait for the next elevator. I say "Can you believe some people?" And we both chuckle a little bit.

As it turns out, we are headed to the same floor, so we get off the elevator together. As we walk into an office, there is guy #1 Mr Impatient, standing at the desk tapping his foot as the receptionist is finishing up a phone call. The receptionist asks him "can I help you?" And he says "I'm here to see Mr Smith for an interview at 3:30." (it's currently 2:50).

I think to myself "Great, this guy is interviewing for the same position I am and he will act like the sweetest guy during the interview." I lean over and tell the receptionist "I am Mr Smith’s 3 o'clock interview." Mr Impatient GLARES at me.

The other guy I walked in with (the one Mr Impatient cut off) then says "Hey gentlemen, I'm Mr Smith." And turns to Mr Impatient and says "you don't need to wait around. I've already determined you are not a good fit for our company. "

I got the job.

22. Falling into a Dream

Music had always played a big role in Jonathan's life. He liked different types of music, from Hip-Hop to Rock 'n' Roll. One of his favorite bands was The Beatles. He could hear them every day. Jonathan didn't feel that way towards any other band. He had all of their albums, and he knew all the lyrics to their songs.

One day, Jonathan and his girlfriend Sarah went for a ride in Jonathan's car. Sarah was excited to show Jonathan a new band she had heard about. Sarah brought the CD and played it for Jonathan as they drove around town. The first song was called 40 Day Dream, and the band's name was Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes. Jonathan didn't think much of them at first, maybe because he was driving, but after they stopped driving, he had the song stuck in his head.

Jonathan decided to look for their albums. They had three out, so Jonathan decided to buy them all. During a rainy day, Jonathan invited Sarah to his house and they listened to all three of their albums. Jonathan loved the band. He loved how they sounded like bands from the past. He loved how they reminded him of The Beatles.

When he and Sarah were listening to the third album, the song If I were Free came on. Jonathan jumped off his bed and started dancing alone. Sarah looked at him, smiled, and laughed. Jonathan started clapping, and then he started singing. "The light became too heavy, and I fell into a dream," he sang. He fell next to Sarah, looked at her and said, "I feel like I'm in a dream when I listen to this band. Thank you for introducing me to them.

We reached the village easily with the boy leading the way.

With his classmates cheering for him , he became the first to get to the finishing line.

With the problems solved, he was relieved.

With his homework finished ahead of time, he was allowed to watch TV.

With so much homework to do, he can’t go out to play.

With no one to turn to, he felt very upset.

She sat beside the window, with her face pale.

He went out in a hurry, with the door open.

A boy stood outside the classroom, with his head down.

With the meeting over, all the students went back to the classroom.

With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply.

With a book in his hand, the teacher entered the classroom.

Mental pain often comes from being too attached to an idea when a person or an event comes along to challenge it. This is especailly true when what is being pointed out to you involves a weakness on your part. This kind of mental pain is a clue that you are potentially wrong and that you need to think about the question in a quality way. To do this, first calm yourself down.

This can be difficult: You will probably feel your amygdala kicking in through a tightening in your head, tension in your body, or an emerging sense of annoyance, anger, or irritability. Note these feelings when they arise in you. By being aware of such signals of closed-mindedness, you can use them as cues to control your behavior and guide yourself toward open-mindedness. Doing this regularly will strengthen your ability to keep your “higher-level you” in control. The more you do it, the stronger you will become.

A Seven-character Poem

By Liu Yuxi

-- an Extemporaneous Poem in Response to Bai Juyi at Dinner for the First Meeting in Yangzhou

The remote south has now remained a land of pain;

Twenty-three idle years an outcast did idly spend.

To no avail did I chant On Hearing Nostalgic Flute;

I return only to find the world greatly changed.

The wrecked hulk aground sees a thousand sails pass;

Ahead of ailing tree spring woods grow thick and fast.

But I listen to the encouraging song you sing today,

And your wine has temporarily inspirited my weary heart.
