The sky is tinged with a trace of pink. There is nothing outside to suggest that mysterious and strange things would soon be happening in my life. I finally threw him out, and had a very serious talk with my daughter about domestic violence NEVER being acceptable and how wrong I had been to put up with it!

Some years later, in one of her first serious relationships, she phoned me and asked if I could collect her to take her to the hospital as her partner had hit her! She’s 4′11″ size 8 he was 5′10″ and built like a rugby player. Oh no I thought, the pattern is repeating…

It turns out he’d slapped her for the first time, (not having his dinner ready!) and she responded by defending herself! To the point, she’d broken her finger. He then turned up in A&E sporting a split lip, a couple of black eyes, and a broken nose. We eavesdropped as he said he’d fallen down some stairs even though my daughter had already explained to A&E why she was there and who he was. His bags were packed and left outside by the time he got back from the hospital and all credit to my daughter, no amount of begging, crying, or pleading changed her mind to take him back!

Her stance, that I wish I had, ‘You hit me once, I’m hitting back in self defense and then you’re out of my life for good’…

I still smile thinking of what a strong young lady I’ve raised and how she is now happily married to a man who has never raised his hand to a woman.
